What does Dr. Hallam say about Botox?

Botox is one of the most effective, tried and tested anti wrinkle solutions available and is recommended in some form for everyone. Botox is so popular because it just works. It can leave you looking smoother, relaxed and lifted, amazingly so for some people.

However, there is definitely an art to achieving a very natural fresh look with Botox. Sticking rigidly to a specific area is not always the best way to achieve this. Face shape and movement must be carefully considered when using Botox, so treatments must be individually tailored to the person.

It is generally a good idea to start with an initial conservative dose and then review the results after two weeks and make adjustments, if necessary.

WHAT IS BOTOX AND HOW DOES IT WORK?

Botox (Botulinum Toxin) is the most effective, tried and tested solutions for wrinkles caused by the contraction of the facial muscles.
It is a highly purified naturally occurring compound that blocks nerve endings resulting in muscle relaxation when injected in minute quantities. Several brands are available including:
bullet   Botox;
bullet   Xeomin;
bullet   Azzulure.

HOW DOES BOTOX HELP YOU?

Smoother, tighter skin with fewer wrinkles results from subtle use of Botox in certain area of excess movement. This is because flaccid skin continually creases with muscle movement and as the skin thins with time, these lines get worse and become established.
When administered correctly, with an artistic eye, Botox can leave your skin looking fresh and natural without loosing expression.

Botox can also be used as part of a non-surgical facelift. Some muscles pull the face down and make it look more droopy, angry or tired. Slightly weakening these muscles results in these areas being lifted.
Treatment of the large chewing muscle on the side of the lower face called the masseter muscle reduces its size and power. Chewing is not compromised but if you suffer with night time teeth grinding, the procedure will help.
Botox will also slim the lower face in those with a wide, heavy jaw.
Botox can also be used to reduce excessive sweating on the face, scalp and under the arms.

HOW IS BOTOX ADMINISTERED?

The facial movement and shape are assessed. The areas to be injected are cleansed and then the Botox is administered in minute doses using a fine needle. A light pinching sensation is usually experienced as the Botox is injected. The procedure usually takes between 10 and 15 minutes, and you can go on with your day immediately after the treatment.

WHICH AREAS CAN BE TREATED?

Botox treatment to reduce wrinkles works especially well for:

bullet   Frown lines
bullet   Horizontal upper forehead lines
bullet   Crows feet;
bullet   Bunny lines, those lines when you wrinkle your nose
bullet   Lines above the upper lip.

Botox can also be used as part of the non-surgical facelift. Certain muscles pull the face down and tend to make the face look more angry or tired. Targeted application can achieve the following:
bullet   Lift the eyebrows, opening the eyes
bullet   Uplift the corners off the mouth
bullet   Nefertiti lift – this tightens sagging under the jaw line
bullet   Softening of the neck lines and neck strings
bullet  Slimming and softening of the masseter or chewing muscle, which can cause a wide jaw.

bullet  Softening and lengthening the chin

HOW LONG DOES BOTOX LAST?

Botox takes effect after 3-10 days and usually lasts for between 3 and 4 months. Botox can be used as a one-off fix for a special occasion, but for the best results for wrinkle improvement and perhaps more importantly, wrinkle prevention, repeat courses are recommended.
Most people have 2-3 tretaments per year.

HOW SAFE IS BOTOX?

Botox has been used in medicine for 30 years for many conditions including children with cerebral palsy, stroke, squints and bladder problems.

Botox has a very good safety record and no long term effects have been found.
